“Kagami-mochi” is rice cake, the shape of which resembles
the New Year gods.
It gives all family power to live through the new year. This
new power is
the original “otoshi-dama”. Although children receive money
now, in the
past,they received small round “mochi”, which is called otoshi-dama.
It was believed that eating this “mochi” gave strength and
good health during
the whole year.
