On Setsubun,we throw beans and chase away evil spirits,
which
represent sickness and misfortune.
At the same time that we chase away
evil spirits,
we invite good spirits to come. The next day is the first
day of spring, also
considered by some to be the first day of the year.
There
is a custom in Japan that we eat beans more than our age
by one, in anticipation of the coming year. Setsubun is
the day when we drive away evil and welcome a peaceful new
year. |
