Goshiki means five colors--blue,red,yellow,white and black. Blue stands
for the east, red for south, yellow for center,
white for west and black for north.
They also represent seasons:blue for spring, red for summer, yellow for
midsummer (midseason),white for autumn and black for winter. Green is often
substituted for blue, and purple for black. These are often used lucky colors
in shrines and temples.
